Farshaad Bilimoria

BMLSc ’10

Dr. Bilimoria shares about making life-long friendships and how the hands-on learning experience of the BMLSc program gave him the foundations for his career as a forensic pathologist.

What’s your current career or educational program?

I am a forensic pathologist with the BC Coroners Service, and I practice at Abbotsford Regional Hospital in Abbotsford, BC and at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, BC.

Describe what you do.

I perform autopsies for deaths the coroners’ service takes jurisdiction on as part of their investigation.

What has been your journey, since graduating from the BMLSc Program (e.g. further education/training, work positions held, awards/honours/scholarships/recognition received)?

After BMLSc, I went to St George’s University in Grenada for medical school.  I did my residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology in the Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA, followed by a fellowship in Forensic Pathology at the King County Medical Examiners Office/University of Washington program in Seattle, WA.  Upon completing my training, I returned to Vancouver, BC and have been working with the BC Coroners Service since.

How did your BMLSc degree help you to get where you are now?

BMLSC gave me a strong foundation in the knowledge and technical information of histology, pathology, and clinical laboratory medicine to use as I entered a career in medicine and the discipline of pathology

What is the most valuable experience you gained from the BMLSc Program?

The hands-on learning. No amount of lecturing can replace actually being in a lab, doing the techniques, using the tools, and interpreting the results.

What did you enjoy most about the program or what is your favorite memory from your time in the Program?

The camaraderie.  I am still in touch and meet up with my classmates from my years in BMLSc.

What is one piece of advice that you would give to BMLSc students and recent graduates?

Build friendships with your classmates and stay in touch after.

Name one thing on your bucket list.

Travel the world in first-class.
